Do I need to be creative?

Not at all.

In fact, that's probably the most common thing people tell me before they arrive!

Around 92% of my guests have never done pottery before. My sessions are designed for complete beginners, and I'll guide you every step of the way.

Are your classes beginner-friendly?

Absolutely.

Whether you've never touched clay before or you've been creating for years, everyone is welcome. I'll meet you at your own level and help you bring your ideas to life.

Can I come on my own?

Absolutely!

Many people come on their own and quickly find themselves chatting and creating alongside others. The studio has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, and you'll never feel out of place.

How long does a session take?

Sessions run for up to two hours.

Some people finish a little earlier, while others could happily spend four hours perfecting one mug!

If I don't have another session afterwards, you're welcome to stay a little longer to finish your piece. If another class is starting, we'll need to finish within the allocated session time.

Private events generally run for 2–2.5 hours.

How much is 500g of clay?

500g is about the size of a block of butter.

It might not look like much at first, but it's surprising how much you can create.

It's enough to make things like:

  • A large mug

  • Two espresso cups

  • A small bowl

  • A jewellery dish

  • A planter

  • A candle holder

  • A soap dish

  • A vase

Or something completely unique.

Different hand-building techniques create different-sized pieces, and I'll happily help you get the most from your clay.

If you'd like to make something larger, extra clay can be purchased during your session.

What materials are included?

Every session includes:

  • 500g of clay

  • All tools and equipment

  • Stamps, textures and embellishments

  • Underglazes (paint)

  • Bisque firing

  • Clear glaze

  • Final glaze firing

  • My guidance throughout the session

Can I make something bigger?

Absolutely.

If you'd like extra clay, it can be purchased on the day. The cost depends on the size and weight of your finished piece.

Do you use the pottery wheel?

No.

The Clay Station specialises in hand-building pottery.

Hand-building gives you much more creative freedom than the pottery wheel. You can still create mugs, bowls, vases and planters, but you also have the freedom to make sculptures, houses, candle holders and completely original pieces.

It's also much cleaner than wheel throwing and allows me to bring pottery experiences to wineries, offices, restaurants and private events throughout Queenstown.

Do I get to paint my pottery?

Yes!

You'll decorate your pottery during your session using ceramic underglazes.

These can be painted directly onto the clay before firing, making them perfect for travellers or anyone who may not be able to return for a second painting session.

If you'd like a specialty glaze finish, I can glaze your piece after the session for an additional charge.

Can I take my pottery home on the day?

No.

Pottery needs time to dry completely before it can be fired. If it's fired while still damp, it can crack or even explode in the kiln.

Each piece goes through:

  • Drying

  • Bisque firing

  • Glazing

  • Final glaze firing

Your pottery is usually ready within 3–4 weeks, although occasionally it may take a little longer depending on drying conditions and kiln schedules.

I'll message you as soon as it's ready to collect.

Do you post pottery?

Yes.

Postage is available throughout New Zealand and internationally at your expense.

As a rough guide:

  • South Island — from approximately $15

  • North Island — from approximately $17

  • Australia — from approximately $29

Prices vary depending on the size and weight of your finished piece. Once it's packaged and weighed, I'll let you know the exact postage cost.

Is pottery messy?

Not really.

Unlike wheel throwing, hand-building uses very little water, making it much cleaner than most people expect.

Everyone works on their own pottery board, so cleanup is simple.

Do I need to bring an apron?

No.

Most people don't wear one, although you're very welcome to if you'd like.

Clay and underglaze generally wash out of clothing, but it's always a good idea to wear something you don't mind getting a little creative in.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting a little clay on.

Closed-toe shoes are recommended.

What is the minimum age?

Public sessions are recommended for ages 16+.

Children are welcome when attending with an adult, and I also offer private pottery parties for younger groups by arrangement.

Can I make a gift?

Absolutely!

Many guests make handmade gifts for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, Christmas and special occasions. Handmade pottery is personal, thoughtful and something people treasure for years.

Can I book a private event?

Absolutely.

I offer private events for:

  • Hen's parties

  • Birthdays

  • Family celebrations

  • Corporate team building

  • Retreats

  • Friend groups

  • Special occasions

Events can be held in my Lake Hayes studio or at a venue of your choice.

Are you mobile?

Yes.

For private groups of 8 or more, I can bring The Clay Station to your venue.

I've held workshops at wineries, restaurants, offices, Airbnbs, retreats and private homes throughout Queenstown and beyond.

Can I bring my own food and drinks?

Yes.

You're very welcome to bring food and drinks to enjoy during your session.

Can I book on weekends?

Yes.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday sessions are available by request and are $50 per person.

What is your cancellation policy?

Bookings are non-refundable.

If your plans change, you can reschedule your booking through the online booking system up to 24 hours before your session.

If something unexpected happens, please get in touch and we'll work through the options together.

Do you have a loyalty programme?

Yes!

Every sixth session is free.

Is the studio wheelchair accessible?

Yes.

The studio itself is wheelchair accessible.

Please note that the toilet facilities are not fully wheelchair accessible.

Where are you located?

The Clay Station is located in Lake Hayes Estate, Queenstown, New Zealand.

Your booking confirmation will include everything you need to find the studio.

How do I redeem a gift voucher?
